PaTH Towards a Learning Health System (PaTH). Spanish Story Booth

Overview of the Study

The MyPaTH Story Booth is a powerful research initiative designed to bring the voices of patients, caregivers, and healthcare workers directly into the heart of health research. By collecting audio-recorded stories of real experiences with health and the healthcare system, the project creates a searchable archive to guide patient-centered research and improve healthcare delivery.

In this project, 31 participants shared personal narratives about illness, caregiving, and navigating health systems. These stories form the foundation for research questions that truly reflect the needs and perspectives of patients and communities.

Challenges in Managing a Story Archive

Collecting and curating authentic stories came with its own hurdles. With dozens of participants across different backgrounds, the team needed to ensure:

  • Accurate Transcription of audio stories that captured emotion and nuance.

  • Protection of Privacy, including removing identifying details while keeping stories authentic.

  • Organized, Searchable Data so researchers could easily find narratives relevant to their work.

  • Consistency Across Languages, since some stories included Spanish or bilingual elements that required careful translation.

Managing these needs manually would have been overwhelming and risked losing the richness of the stories participants entrusted to the archive.

How ANT Supported the Story Booth

We provided HIPAA-compliant transcription for every audio-recorded story, preserving participants’ words while carefully masking identifiable details. For stories told in Spanish, we ensured accurate translation that honored cultural nuances and emotional tone.

Our team then organized and coded the transcripts, structuring them into an easily searchable format for researchers. This groundwork allowed the project team to quickly identify themes and patterns, making the archive a living resource rather than just a collection of files.

By handling transcription, translation, and data structuring, ANT freed the MyPaTH team to focus on what matters most: helping researchers, providers, and patients use these stories to shape a more equitable, responsive healthcare system.

The Impact

With ANT’s support, the MyPaTH Story Booth now houses a robust, well-organized archive of 31 participant stories that researchers can access to develop patient-centered research questions and improve care delivery. The project ensures that patient and caregiver voices especially those from underrepresented communities are not just heard but drive the future of health research and practice.

Why Our Role Matters

At ANT, we see every story as more than data. It’s a lived experience that can transform how healthcare works. By combining transcription, translation, and privacy management, we help projects like MyPaTH create resources that amplify community voices and advance a truly learning health system.
